Is Hip-Hop Dead ?

By Kwame Edwards

Completely original topic, I know but NaS as he does best has people thinking. When he released the title of his new album he was an artist saying what a lot of people have been thinking for a while. So how can an artist say the very thing that gives him a paycheck. The death of hip hop cannot be linked to one instance or fad. It was the popularity of all things non-lyrical. With the emergence of Southern Hip Hop acts like D4L and Dem Franchise Boyz along with Hyphy and Crunk music becoming popular, artist with a message were quickly overlooked. This Singles based club track artist have made sales for Hip hop once automatic chart toppers struggle to sell records. 2006 was really a horrible year for hip hop because while old favorites came out with albums the creation of new artist where very low in-fact the most high profile **New Artist** was Lupe Fiasco and he failed to go platinum. They where some hip hop success stories like Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne(solo) but they fail to bring anything new to the table beside the regular talk of drugs and money people want more of the same untill they find something better. The future looks bright for Alternative hip hop to come out because they have been getting a following with the help of Myspace and the help of MTV groups like Fort Minor and Gym Class Heroes look to bring something fresh to hip hop the same thing that may have saved Rock and Punk music change. So to answer NaS question no hip hop is not dead it’s the places people have been looking for hiphop thats dead. Check out these links for some good alternative hip-hop.
